LAPS V3 @ GEOGRAPHIES VARIABLES, LORIENT 2010

The Internet network is a space that extends the scope of our daily experiences, and yet it is quite difficult to have a clear representation of it. The "Laps" project is based on strteaming audio through the web. The transmission errors that occur during these streamings are analysed and then considered as a potential and incomplete layout of the network topography. Similar to a landscape, this digital topography proves to be an unstable organisation of patterns, shapes and outlines opening the way to multiple mental representations. This imaginary scope is made perceptible trough an immersive sound and light installation.

AV-PERMUTATION @ BBB, TOULOUSE 2009

A/V permutations is a new version of the LAPS installation. It borrows an image from the psychodiagnostic of Rorschach. These abstract shapes are conceived to give free rein to interpretations and allows the psychologists to estimate the personality of a subject. In this piece in network, the image is sent on internet and returns in the exhibition's space, then is sent back again. This cycle is reproduced ad infinitum. As time goes, the image is restructured by errors of transmission which accumulate until complete crumbling of the initial shape. The permutations which take place slowly inside the image prolong and spread its initial potential, and can produce a set of new associations and interpretations. The action of the Internet users on the congestion of the Web has a direct influence on the evolution of this installation, giving to the system its instability and its suggestive richness.

LAPS V2@ CIMATICS, IMAL, BRUXELLES 2009

LAPS is an audio and visual installation that uses Internet as an imaginary space where sound echoes, reverberates throughout the Web. Based on transmission errors, the sound material is shaped by the virtual acoustic space of the network. Sound streams broadcasted within the installation structure gradually echoes the activity of the Web in various locations of the globe. Its analysis in these various points is used to progressively draw the contours of an imaginary landscape inside the installation.

LAPS V1@ RIAM, MARSEILLE 2007

LAPS, EARLY RESEARCHES 2006 - 2008

The laps research field is focusing on the network as a potential space / scape. We try to reveal these aspects by broadcasting audio stream loops that travels and reverberates through the world wide web. Listening with specifics process* to these audio streams allows to make audible an infinity of transformations occuring to this stream while circulating over the web. We consider these changes as erosion caused by the Network space, a key for us to activate different mental representations of this digital scape.
A first step focusing on the typical lags in audio streaming :
France culture bugs : Locus-stream :
A second step focusing on the typical ghost tones in corrupted audio streams :
Sine loop : Noise loop :
* very low buffers and no error correction
